Animal Assisted Therapy Release

The use of animals by health professionals in their work is called animal-assisted therapy. Numerous studies show that interacting with animals helps people lower their blood pressure, increases engagement, and benefits clients with anxiety, depression, and trauma. Ollie is a verified and registered therapy dog with the Monroe County Humane Association. He is recertified every two years with their program to ensure he is up-to-date on training and behavior requirements.

Due to the nature of working with animals, it is impossible to perceive at all times how an animal is feeling, making predictability something that cannot be assured 100% of the time. We do not anticipate injuries, and precautions are taken to minimize the minimal risks that might exist with any animal, but as there is always some risk that a participant could get scratched or bitten during activities. We need to be sure you accept this risk.

Client confidentiality is a vital component to the therapeutic process, however there is a limitation when considering animal-assisted therapy. While I will not approach you, there is a chance Ollie may recognize you outside of session and want to approach. Don’t worry, he is friendly with most people, so no one needs to know that he actually has a working relationship with you and we will do our best to avoid these situations when possible.

By signing and dating this form you are acknowledging that you understand the risks associated with working with any animal and agree to hold us harmless, release us, and waive and forever discharge Spencer Psychology, and it’s members and employees from any and all claims or causes of action which may arise from the participation in the program.
